Product Review- Protes Protein Chips

(Please excuse the modelling paint all over my fingers in these pics).

I'm going to be honest here- I love to snack. Being a college student, as well as simply a human being, sometimes I just can't wait until my next meal to do a little (or more than a little) munching. Unfortunately, however, snacking often means grabbing whatever is cheap and available- and therefore, something not always so healthy.

If this is ringing bells for anyone, I'd like to introduce you to Protes.

Protes are a protein chip with 15 grams of protein and 1 (yes, ONE) gram of sugar per 1 ounce serving. They come in four flavors- Toasted Coconut, Spicy Chili Lime, Zesty Nacho and Tangy Southern Barbecue. The main ingredients include pea protein isolate, potato flakes, sunflower seed oil, and guar gum, along with various seasonings. These guys are gluten free, vegan, low carb, low fat and non-GMO- a combo which I'd say puts most major chip companies to shame. Also, did I mention the 15 grams of protein?!

So let's do a flavor breakdown, shall we? I believe that dessert should come first, so I'm starting with Toasted Coconut. I found this one to be a nice combo of salty and sweet, and you could definitely taste the coconut. It actually reminded me of shredded and toasted coconut meat, which has been a favorite snack of mine since childhood- just with a lot more crunch! I also loved the visible seasoning bits on the chip. It's nice when you can actually see the different components of your food. (4/5 for flavor)

Next I tried Spicy Chili Lime. While this one was my least favorite, that's not saying much, as it still tasted amazing. I thought the amount of spice added just the right amount of kick to this chip. That said, spicy definitely depends on taste preference, so some people may find there to be too/ not enough of a kick (I'd sway slightly to the "not enough" side).

I found the chili to come first, and then the lime, which actually worked quite well as flavor combinations go. Additionally, I didn't find this one to be overly salty, as so many other brands of chili-lime combo chips are. My FOMO over the fact that Takis aren't gluten free has severely decreased due to this one- so, thanks Protes! (3.5/5 for flavor)

Third is Zesty Nacho. Oh man, were these good. I felt like I was (almost) eating straight toasted cheese.

This chip had a slight fake cheese aftertaste, but it's from a bag and not a deli counter, so I can't really complain. The cheese taste wasn't overpowering, which I really liked- too much cheese flavoring can feel a little... cheesy (sorry, that had to happen at some point). Though I haven't had a Cheez-It in thirteen years (thx Celiac), this is somewhat how I imagine they taste. Big thumbs up for Zesty Nacho. (4/5 for flavor)

And now for my favorite- Tangy Southern Barbecue. Now listen y'all, I know I'm not exactly a barbecue sauce connoisseur. But cut me some slack. I'm a Greek kid who was born in LA, so I can't always tell my Sweet Baby Ray's from... well, you get my point. But this chip tasted straight out of the sauce bottle to me. (4.5/5 for flavor)

Overall, I would completely recommend any of these four flavors. Each one also had a really nice crunch and texture, much like that of your good ol' tortilla chip. You can buy Protes online here (they start at $20.99 for 12), or use their store locator to see if they're sold near you. Until next time-

Peace, love and gluten free donuts
